Tour Description
We are going to explore Tallinn, the capital of Estonia today. It’s perfect for a shore excursion or comprehensive tour in the Old Town and its surroundings like Rotermanni and Telliskivi areas.
First established in the early medieval era, today’s Tallinn is an exciting mix of old and new. With Tallinn being such a compact, green capital, you can cover a lot in just a few hours and enjoy short scenic strolls while at it. Tallinn Old Town is one of the best-preserved Hanseatic town centres in the world and a UNESCO heritage site.
Tallinn is the first point of entry to Estonia for most visitors, and if you’re the kind of person who likes to jump right in, then you’re in luck, as Tallinn city centre is never more than 15-minutes away regardless of if you happen to arrive by plane, train, coach or ferry.
During the tour, we will visit the Old Town which has managed to wholly preserve its structure of medieval and Hanseatic origin. Due to its exceptionally intact 13th-century city plan, the Old Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, joining the ranks of the world’s most recognised landmarks. Here you’ll find original cobblestone streets dotted with medieval churches and grandiose merchant houses, barns and warehouses many of which date back to the Middle Ages. Spend some time in an authentic medieval milieu and you will soon realise why so many visitors have described Tallinn Old Town as mystical, mesmerising and addictive.
We walk both in the lower and upper parts of the Old Town, see the most important sights, hear the stories of past and present, admire the view from different viewing platforms, and better understand the country’s history. We also step into a nearby market area and visit some sights outside the city walls. There are a lot of photo opportunities on the way to take advantage of, so don’t forget to bring your camera.
As this is a private tour then we can also combine a walking tour with a drive in the suburbs of Tallinn where You can’t get that easily by yourself. For starters, we take a look at the “hipsterville” Kalamaja as well as Kopli and Paljassaare peninsulas, which all hide some real architectural gems and interesting stories. From there we drive through Lasnamäe to Kadriorg, Pirita and Viimsi which lie on the other side of the Tallinn Bay from where we started in the morning. You see the differences in each part of the city, and understand the history and the local communities a little better than before.
